Matangeshwar Temple

At a distance of 1 km from the Khajuraho Bus Stand, Matangeshwar Temple is a Hindu temple that stands next to the famous Lakshmana Temple in Khajuraho, Madhya Pradesh, India. It is located among the Western Group of temples. Among the Chandela-era monuments of Khajuraho, this is the only Hindu temple that is still actively used for worship.

The temple of Matangeshwar was built by the Chandela dynasty ruler Chandra Dev in the early 10th century AD. The king was an ardent devotee of Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva is considered the venerated sage Matang and hence the name Matangeswarar. It is one of the oldest temples in Madhya Pradesh.

This temple houses some of the largest Shiva lingams in India. The lingam is eight feet in height and is made up of sparkling yellow limestone. There is a little Ganesh structure at the upper right, and an extensive picture of a Goddess with two smaller attendant deities was set up on the way towards the temple. This is one of the holiest temples of central India and is revered by many devotees.

Lord Shiva is worshiped by following a daily ritual of bathing the Linga with milk, bilva leaves, and flowers. Maha Shivaratri is observed in this temple with great fervor. The lingam is bathed, dressed, and decorated like a human bridegroom during the marriage ceremony on the auspicious occasion of Mahashivratri. People from distant lands gather in this temple to offer prayers and seek the blessings of the almighty.

History of Matangeshwar Temple

The Matang is known as the 10th Incarnation / Avtar of Lord Shiva, He was the forefather of the great philosopher Mamaidev, the Maheshary community is the devotee of Matang, and he preached to poor Maisarias and Sinbhariya Meghvar community of India, He was the pioneer of Baramati Panth dharma and he has given word Dharmachar to poor main arias Meghvar.

Matangeshwar temple is located in the world-famous UNESCO world heritage site at Khajuraho town M.P.state of India, Matangeshwar temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. This temple was built by King Chandra Dev of the Chandra dynasty. The king was a devotee of Shiva Matang while Millions of Maheshwary were the devotee of Matang Shiva in India, Sindh Pakistan, and other countries.

Architecture of Matangeshwar Temple

The temple is more than 1100 years old. The south of this temple is an open-air Archaeological Museum that has a beautifully displayed collection of statues.

Unusual like other temples of Khajuraho the exterior and interior of this temple along with its pillars are not decorated with sculptures but the ceiling is overlapped with sculptures.
