Nanakmatta Gurudwara, Uttarakhand
Gurudwara Nanakmatta Sahib is a historical holy shrine for Sikhs that is visited by devotees in large numbers every month. The town is named after the Gurudwara.
Situated on the Khtima-Panipat road between Khatima and Sitarganj, the place has emerged in deep history. It is said that Guru Nanak Dev Ji came to this place in the year 1514 during his 3rd udasi. Before that, the Gurudwara was devoted to Guru Gorakhnath and houses his follower's Yogis or Siddhas. The belief is that the Yogis didn't let the commoners become learned and used their occult powers to stop them. It was Guru Nanak Ji who enlightened the Yogis to the way of meditation and salvation.
Baoli Sahib
Baoli Sahib is located near Nanak Sagar Dam on the banks of the Ghaghra River about 2 km from Nanakmatta Gurudwara. As per the legend, the Yogis dried up the water in the whole area with their magical powers and challenged Nanak Dev Ji to bring the water back.
Nanak Devi Ji then instructed Bhai Marada on this task by asking him to drag the spade behind him to get the river back. He performed the task and the river followed until he looked behind to check up on the river. Due to his actions, the river stopped at this place and Guru Dev Ji asked the Yogis to complete the remaining task by their magical power. This brought a realization to them of their fault and a Baoli was constructed after that known as Baoli Sahib.
