A stunning architectural marvel in Lucknow that dates back to the time of the Nawabs of Lucknow, Chhatar Manzil is one of the most popular historical sites in Lucknow. The literal meaning of the term ‘Chhatar’ is Umbrella which comes from its guilt dome with a covering umbrella. Located on the banks of the Gomati River, the foundation of this remarkable tourist place in Lucknow was laid by Nawab Ghazi-ud-din Haider. However, the construction of Chhatar Mazil got complete in the reign of his son - Nasir-ud-din Haider. The architecture of this historical building boasts a beautiful fusion of both Indian and European architectural styles. This must-visit tourist attraction in Lucknow also includes a well-manicured garden which is also the talk of this site.

History of Chhatar Manzil

Chhatar Manzil is also called Chhatar Mahal because the shape of its dome is like a canopy. Chhatar Manzil is a historical building in Lucknow. It was started in 1814 by the Nawab of Awadh Ghaziuddin Haider and was completed in 1828 by his successor Nawab Nasiruddin Haider after his death.

Architecture of Chhatar Manzil

The famous Umbrella Palace or the Chattar Manzil hosts octagonal towers that hold up its signature umbrella-shaped dome. Formerly divided into the larger (bari) umbrella dome and the smaller (chhoti) one, the Chattar Manzil has been preserved the Bari Chattar Manzil, embellished in gold.
This palace is a five-storied structure housing two basement storeys and a terrace that initially had two telescopes during colonial times. However, since the CDRI no longer resides here, talks about converting this Umbrella Palace into an Awadh Museum are ongoing.
