Designed by Sir William Emerson in the year 1871, All Saints Cathedral Church is one of the most sacred sites in Prayagraj. It is reckoned to be one of the finest Anglican churches in Asia. Such is the charm of the impressive architecture and exquisiteness of the marble altar that this popular church in Prayagraj is touted as an architectural delight for visitors. The church is often entitled Pathar Girjaghat which refers to ‘Church of Stones’. Every year, on November 1, the church celebrates its anniversary. Throughout the year, this popular tourist site in Prayagraj remains dotted with countless tourists. However, the crowd gets doubled up on the days of Christmas, Easter, and Good Friday.

History of All Saints Cathedral Church

The Lt. Governor of the North-West Province of India, William Muir, was the man behind the construction of this popular sacred site in Prayagraj. He granted the land to build the cathedral. Later in the year 1871, his wife, Elizabeth Huntly Wemyss laid the foundation of the church. To construct the building of the church, William Emerson (a British architect) was hired who already designed Muir College and Crawford Market.

Architecture of All Saints Cathedral Church

All Saints Cathedral Church boasts an impressive Gothic style of architecture. The nave of the church is around 130 feet long and 40 feet wide. However, the total length of the cathedral is 240 feet. Despite being more than a century old, the marble and glasswork of this popular Christian religious site in Prayagraj are still well-preserved. The church also includes plaques that tell the death of various British nationals.
