Sangameshwar Temple
Sangameshwar temple is an ancient holy shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva. Located in Somasila in the district of Mahbubnagar, it is a significant tourist attraction. Lord Shiva in the form of Shiva Lingam is the chief presiding deity in the temple. Sangameshwar Temple is the most prominent one amongst 15 other temples dedicated to Lord Shiva in the area. It is said to be built 200 years ago, a few years after the British colonized India.
History of Sangameshwar Temple
According to Krutha Yuga, there was a King Raja Kupendra from Surya Vamsham. He had a skin disease for which there was no remedy.
Once the king went to the forest for hunting, where he found Ketaki Vanam. There he found a stream that washed his body. Surprisingly the skin disease was the cure. On the same night, the king had a dream in which Lord Shiva instructed him to build a temple.
The king built the temple, and the stream is Pushkarini consisting of 8 there has or “Astha Theertha Amrutha Gundam.” The Pushkarini is known as Dakshina Kasi.
It is said that after creating the World, Lord Brahma visited this place for meditation. Brahma himself created the Shiva Lingam. The specialty here is, devotees offer Ketaki flowers and leaves to Shiva Lingam, which are not offered to Lord Shiva.
Architecture of the Sangameshwar Temple
The temple architecture speaks for itself. There are many forms of Shiva Lingas inside the temple. The temple has many pillars. The main shrine depicts the Telangana culture.
Besides the magnificent architecture of the temple, the spot is also famous as a pleasant picnic spot due to the beautiful landscape.
The temple is crowded by devotees and pilgrims from other states like Karnataka and Maharashtra as well.
