History of the Rock Garden

The Rock Garden holds a fascinating history that reflects the vision, creativity, and dedication of its creator, Nek Chand Saini. It is said that he used to work as a road inspector for the Chandigarh Engineering Department. During his work, he often collected materials like broken tiles, bangles, glass, and rocks from construction sites. Inspired by his childhood creativity and a desire to transform waste into something beautiful, he began secretly creating sculptures and installations in a gorge near Sukhna Lake in 1957.

For over a decade, Nek Chand worked in secret, dedicating his evenings and weekends to building his sculptures. He transformed the rocky terrain into a world of intricate pathways, waterfalls, amphitheaters, and thousands of sculptures made from recycled materials. His creations depicted a blend of human figures, animals, and abstract designs, reflecting his deep connection with both nature and culture.

In the late 1960s, Nek Chand's secret garden was discovered by city officials during routine inspections. Initially, his work faced resistance and was deemed unauthorized. However, recognizing the artistic and cultural value of his creations, the local authorities decided to support him, and in 1976, the Rock Garden was inaugurated as a public space.

With official recognition and support, Nek Chand was able to expand the Rock Garden and continue his artistic endeavors. He led a team of workers and volunteers to enhance the garden's infrastructure, adding new sections, sculptures, and water features. Over the years, the garden became a popular tourist attraction in Chandigarh, drawing visitors from around the world.
