Dere Baba Banda is a 300-year old Gurudwara and a major pilgrimage point for Sikhs. It is renowned for housing the ashes of Baba Banda Bahadur who was the commanding soldier of Guru Gobind Singh's army. The Gurudwara also houses his arrow and a huge sword used by him during wars.
Being one of the important religious centers in Kashmir, the Gurudwara Dere Baba Banda attracts a huge number of pilgrims, especially during the three-day Vaisakhi Mela. The architecture of the Gurudwara is stunning with the interior walls glinting in the textures of golden shade.
History
The 300-year-old Dera Baba Banda Bahadur has a historic Gurdwara which has the samadhi of Banda Bahadur the famous Jathedar appointed by Sri Guru Gobind Singh. It is situated in the Reasi District on the bank of the river Chenab, approximately 75 km from Jammu city of Jammu and Kashmir state. Besides the ashes of Banda Bahadur, the Dera has an arrow given to Banda by Guru Gobind Singh and other weapons, including a huge sword, which is all displayed to the delight of the visitors during the mela.
Every year an average of 30,000 Devotees, from all over northern India, visit the year and especially on the occasion of Vaishakhi when a three-day Mela is held. The dera is run by mahant S. Jatinder Pal Singh.
The spot has become a pilgrim destination and a tourist spot. Many Buses and other light vehicles are available from Reasi and Katra for trips to the site.
