Se Cathedral Church, Goa
The Se Cathedral of Goa is located in old Goa and is around 9 kilometers from the capital city Panaji. The Se Cathedral of Goa is dedicated to St. Catherine of Alexandria. This magnificent edifice was built in the 16th century under Portuguese rule in India. The construction of the church began in 1562 and finished in 1619. It was sanctified in 1640.
The church is famous for its giant bell known as the "Golden Bell". The bell is known for its melody and rich tone and is the largest bell in Goa and one of the best in the world. The walls of the church are decorated with lovely paintings that are quite old. On the right side of the main altar, there is a chapel of the Cross of Miracles. It is said that here a vision of Jesus Christ had appeared in the year 1919. They say since then, the cross hung over there has been growing in size slowly. There is a golden screen just behind the main altar in the church that looks splendid. The Se Cathedral is a must-visit while touring Goa.
History
The Cathedral is devoted to St. Catherine of Alexandria, it is said that it was built to celebrate the victory of the Portuguese ruler Alfonso Albuquerque who destroyed the Muslim army and took ownership of the city of Goa. Consequently, it is also called St. Catherine's Cathedral. In 1953, the Cathedral was presented with "The Golden Rose" by Venerable Pope Pius XII. It is a gold ornament, which the Popes of the Catholic Church have traditionally favored and given as a symbol of devotion or affection.
You can witness it as it is placed on the tomb of St. Francis Xavier. It was approved by Governor George Cabral to be spread in 1552 on the remains of an earlier structure. The formation of the church began in 1562. The church was completed in 1619 and was consecrated in 1640. It is a perfect place to experience a blend of peace and tranquillity. Architecture
Se Cathedral has always been known for its unique architecture. This cathedral was designed by the stalwart engineers, Ambrosio Argueiro and Julio Simao. The Cathedral exhibits the power, fame, and wealth of the colonial Portuguese. The church has got high ceilings and the structure is majestic enough to mesmerize you all. The west-facing cathedral's 98 ft high facade is worth watching. The facade exhibits the Portuguese Manueline style. The Corinthian style is quite prominent in the interiors of the church, especially in the lofty towers. The major attractions of Se Cathedral are the 15 altars, dedicated to Our Lady of Anguish, Our Lady of Three Needs, or Our Lady of Hope. The grand alter is dedicated to St. Catherine of Alexandria. The main altar is highly ornate and one should explore the fascinating curves depicting the major events of the life of St. Catherine. The Cross of Miracles and the Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament have been artistically embellished.
