Old Lighthouse

The Lighthouse is one of the remarkable landmarks in Pondicherry. The French Riviera of the East, Pondy has two lighthouses, an old one and a new one. Where the former has been closed for public appearance, the latter serves as the spot for giving its visitors the most amazing bird's eye view of the city.

During the 19th century, the only landmark for the mariners arriving in Puducherry/Pondicherry was the Red Hills, 3 km towards the west of town. To provide the visitors from the ocean with the right sight, the French planned to build a lighthouse. Following this, in March 1836 the old lighthouse was erected under the guidance of L. Guerre.

After being in existence for years, in 1979 it was discontinued. In the same year came the present Lighthouse which is one of the most visited attractions in Pondicherry. The 157 ft high tower is a host to several cultural events, music fests, and commercial activities.

With the advancement in years, the difference between the two in terms of architecture is quite prominent. The base of the new lighthouse isn't a simple rectangular one but a two-storied circular construction. And not forgetting the height, the former one was much smaller than the one we see today. Despite these dissimilarities, both have been an essential part of the city tour.

After the deactivation of the older one, the one which stands high at present has been able to gain loads of fame. Hence, you may experience a good amount of footfall over here. To add more, it is a spot for taking some amazing pictures, so keep your camera on the roll.
