Muchalinda Sarovar is one of the most sacred places in Bodh Gaya. This is the place where Lord Buddha spent the sixth consecutive week in meditation after attaining enlightenment. It is said that when Lord Buddha was in meditation a strong storm rained down and seeing Buddha getting wet, the Serpent King of the lake, Muchalinda came out of his abode and protected Buddha from the rain.

Muchalinda Sarovar is also known as Lotus Pond. In this, an idol of Lord Buddha has been installed in a meditative position which depicts the same scene. Apart from this, there are many fishes in the lake which the tourists who come here to see puffed up blossoms.

History of Muchalinda Lake

According to Buddhist texts, it is believed that while Siddhartha was in deep meditation on the path to his enlightenment, a strong storm arose. To protect Siddhartha from the storm, the king of serpents, Muchalinda, came from the lake and sheltered him under its hood. After the weather cleared, the serpent king returned to the lake, allowing Siddhartha to continue his meditation, eventually attaining enlightenment.

This legend has made Muchalinda Lake a focal point for visitors, symbolizing protection and divine intervention. Over the centuries, Bodh Gaya has developed into a major pilgrimage destination, drawing visitors from all over the world, and the lake is an integral part of the spiritual circuit.
