Jhandewalan Hanuman Temple, Delhi

Famous for its gigantic statue of Lord Hanuman, which is standing at an imposing height of 108 ft, Jhandewalan Hanuman Temple is one of the highly revered shrines in the capital. Being situated at a strategic location, this statue is so colossal that it can be seen from both Jhandewalan and Karol Bagh metro station that makes it a popular temple in Delhi. Talking about the temple, it was established in the year 2008 by Brahamleen Nagabba Shri Sevagir Ji Maharaj and is devoted to Lord Hanuman.

However, the one interesting thing to know about this famous landmark is that the construction of the Jhandewalan Hanuman Temple took almost 13 years to complete. Apart from its spiritual significance, this beautiful temple is also known for its aesthetic art and architecture making Jhandewalan Hanuman Temple a must-visit tourist attraction in Delhi. The entrance to the temple is constructed in such a way that it resembles the open mouth of a monster (Rakshas). Perhaps, this depicts one of those numerous demons that were conquered by Lord Hanuman during the period of his whole life.

Furthermore, the temple also has a sacred flame which is said to be brought from Jwalaji Temple at Kangra in Himachal Pradesh. Other than the Lord Hanuman, the temple also houses idols of Sai Baba, Lord Shani, and the goddess of Dwarka. One can visit the temple on any day, yet, Tuesdays receive a large gathering of devotees as it is considered as the day of Lord Hanuman.

During the evening aarti, a large number of devotees gather to witness the iconic view of the effigy where the hands of Lord Hanuman, held across the chest, move back to give pilgrims a glimpse of idols of Lord Rama and Goddess Sita located in the heart of Hanuman. This iconic event happens during the evening aarti every Tuesday and Saturday. During the festival of Hanuman Jayanti, Jhandewalan Hanuman Temple becomes one of the most famous temples in Delhi. Besides, other festivals celebrated at this temple are Ram Navami, Shivaratri, Navaratri, and Janmashtami.

During the evening Aarti the statue of Hanumanji moves back a bit and the chest slides apart to reveal Murtis of Shri Ram and Sita Mata. This site is eagerly awaited and witnessed by devotees.

Architecture

With the imposing effigy of Lord Hanuman standing at a height of 108 ft, the architecture of this popular temple is a defining landmark of the city. Just for the fact, it is the second-highest Lord Hanuman idol in the world. Not just this, the temple also has a unique corridor, which resembles the mouth of a monster (Rakshas), from where devotees have to enter the temple. Besides, the idol of Lord Hanuman also includes the images of Lord Rama and his wife Goddess Sita. These images are placed in the heart of Hanuman in his open apart chest.
