Barnawapara Wildlife sanctuary is named after Bar and Nawapara forest villages, which are in the heart of the sanctuary. It is a landmass of undulating terrain dotted with numerous low and high hillocks well-forested area of the North-eastern corner of Raipur district. The Tributaries of Mahanadi are the source of water.
River Balam Delhi forms the western boundary and Jonk River forms the north-eastern boundary of the Sanctuary. The well-stocked forests of the Sanctuary are Classified as Teas sal and mixed forests. This sanctuary is famous for the frequent sighting of the Indian bison (Gaur) Cheetal, Sambhar, Nilgai, and Wild boar are commonly seen. Bar-Nawapara boosts over 150 species of Birds.
Major Attractions in Barnawapara Wildlife Sanctuary
The Barnawapara Wildlife Sanctuary is home to Neelgai, wild boar, tigers, leopards, porcupines, pythons, antelopes, sambhar, and Cheetal, along with 150 species of birds including parrots, Black Bucks, herons, egrets, peafowl, etc. Another sight to behold is the barking deer.
The fearless Indian bison, also known as ‘Gaur’ is regarded as the main offering of the Barnawapara Wildlife Sanctuary. The sanctuary is part of a tropical dry deciduous forest, and the plethora of flora includes Mahua, Semal, Tendu Ber, etc. There is also a canteen available on the premises for the benefit of the travellers
