Also named as the “Smiling Goddess”, Maa Kushmanda is idolized on the fourth day of Navratri. This day signifies passion, anger, and auspiciousness.

Maa Kushmanda is a happy manifestation of Maa Durga and it's conjointly believed that she is the creator of the whole Universe. This can be mirrored in her name furthermore. The primary word of her name is “Ku” which means little. The consequent word “Ushma” means energy or warmth and the third word, “Anda”, means egg. So, her name suggests that she is that the creator of this “little cosmic egg”, that we call our Universe.

On Chaturthi, the day is dedicated to Goddess Kushmanda. Her name means a cosmic egg and she is known to spread energy and warmth to everyone.

History

Maa Kushamanda’s story begins at a time when there was nothing. The complete Universe was empty, there was no sign of life and darkness prevailed all over. Suddenly, a ray of divine lightweight appeared and slowly lighted everything.

Initially, this divine light was formless and had no specific form. However, before long it started taking a clear size, and eventually, it took the form of a Lady. This divine lady, the first being of the Universe, was Maa Kushmanda.

It is believed that Maa Kushmanda was able to create this Universe with her silent smile. She created this “little cosmic egg” and her smile took over the darkness. Maa Kushmanda replaced it with light and gave new life to this Universe.

Soon, she created the Sun, the planets, the stars, and the galaxies that fill our night sky. She seated herself at the center of the Sun and is now believed to be the source of all energy in our Universe. She provides life to all living beings through the sun's rays and is thus, additionally referred to as Shakti.

After this, Maa Kushmanda created 3 divine goddesses, who were conjointly the primary beings of our Universe. She used the central eye on her forehead to create a terrorizing form – “Mahalakshmi”. The second kind was created from her left eye and was named “Mahakali”. Finally, she used her right eye to create “Mahasaraswati”, a smiling and gracious form.

Later, the body of Mahakali gave birth to a male and a female. The male was named Shiva and also the female was named Saraswati. Similarly, Mahalakshmi also gave birth to a male – Bramha - and a female – Lakshmi.

Maa Kushmanda then glanced at Mahasaraswati, who then gave birth to a male and female as well. The male was named Vishnu and the female was named Shakti. After this, Maa Kushmanda offered Sarwaswati to Bramha, Lakshmi to Vishnu, and Sakti to Shiva as companions.

Later, Maa Kushmanda absorbed the 3 divine goddesses within herself and so entered Sakti as an object of divine, powerful, and never-ending energy.

The rituals

Worship Maa Kushmanda by wearing green clothes. During the worship, offer green cardamom, fennel, and kumdha to the mother. <span class="y2iqfc">After this, chant his main mantra 'Om Kushmanda Devyai Namah' 108 times. If you want, you can also recite Siddha Kunjika Stotra.

Kushmanda Mata Bhog

On the fourth day of Navratri, the fourth form of Mother i.e. Goddess Kushmanda is worshipped. By worshiping them, one gets freedom from complex diseases and all the troubles are removed. Offer Malpua to the mother on this day. It is said that by offering this bhog and feeding it to others, the intellect becomes sharp.
