Viralimalai Wildlife Sanctuary
Another well-known wildlife sanctuary in Tamilnadu, Viralimalai is adorned with greenish meadows dotted with evergreen trees and undulating forests. Renowned for housing several species of Peacocks, which is a key reason to attract a larger chunk of tourists around the year, the sanctuary is settled in a small town that is around 30 km away from Trichy and 40 km from Pudukkottai. One can spot a large number of wild peacocks of different species and assorted colors roaming freely around the sanctuary.
By far, the Palawan Peacock Pheasant, or Tandikan is the most exotic and loved peacock in the sanctuary. Moreover, there is also a famous Murugan Temple on the top of a small hillock in Viralimalai. To reach this temple, one needs to ascend 210 steps. If you want to spend quality good time with your family, then a visit to Viralimalai Sanctuary is a must on your Tamil Nadu holidays.
This is the best place to spot peacocks in their natural habitat, roaming freely. There are varieties of peacocks in different colors and species. The local survey says that this sanctuary is the home ground for six species of peacocks from different part of India and south East Asia. The most attractive among them is the Palawan Peacock Pheasant or 'Tandikan' as they impress with their spectacular colors. The number has now risen to 500 and all the birds are scattered over the district of Pudukkottai.
