Gurudongmar Lake
Lavishly sprawled at an altitude of 5425 m, the crystal clear Gurudongmar is a spectacular lake that mirrors the iced mountains enclosing it from all sides. It is one of the highest lakes in the world and is named after Guru Padmasambhava; also known as Guru Dongmar. The lake is considered to be carrying religious significance both in Buddhist and Sikh religions. The surprising fact about this sanctified lake is that even in extreme winters, a part of this lake never freezes. The myth behind this is that Guru Dongmar had once touched and consecrated this lake and made it partially frozen throughout the year. The Lake also carries curing properties and offers an amazing view of Mount Siniolchu and Khanchendzonga. Gurudongmar Lake is extremely popular amongst tourists because of its religious significance, scenic beauty, and admirable treks.
Chopta Valley is a combined tour that comes with Gurudongmar Lake. Then around the lake, there is another spiritual attraction for peace seekers - Sarva Dharma Sthala, which is popularly called the temple for all religions. In just about 9 km of distance, the Tso Lhamu Lake which is famous for being the source of the Teesta River can also be explored to gather the extended charm amidst nature. The other places that can be visited along with the trip to Gurudongmar lake are Lachen village and Thangu village which are just 3-4 hours' drive away.
