Guruaribam Shri Krishna Temple

Traditionally, the construction of this temple is attributed to King Charairongba (1698–1709), the first Hindu king of Manipur. It is said that he built this temple for his guru initiate, Rai Banamali.

History of Guruaribam Shri Krishna Temple

Believed to have been built in 1704 AD by King Charairongba, the first Hindu king of Manipur.

Constructed for his spiritual guide Rai Banamali, who received the lineage name Guruaribam for being the king’s guru.

The Guruaribam family has been entrusted with maintaining the temple ever since.

It is a significant landmark for the Hindu Meitei community and a popular pilgrimage site.

Architecture of Guruaribam Shri Krishna Temple

  • Constructed with bricks and coated with cement on the exterior.
  • Features a raised pedestal with three layers of bricks.
  • The main structure combines a porch hall and a sanctum sanctorum.
  • The sanctum houses the idol of Lord Krishna.
  • The porch has a distinctive flying staircase facade on the south side.
  • The roof has a dome-like hemispherical shape, with a smaller dome over the porch.
  • The temple's crown is decorated with Kalasas (decorative finials) and a Nilachakra (wheel symbol).
