The National Games of India 2022
Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially declared open the 36th National Games at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, on 29th September 2022.
The National Games have made a return to the Indian sporting calendar for the first time since 2015.
The 36th National Games was to be organized in Goa in 2020 but was postponed because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The 36th National Games 2022 is taking place from September 29 till October 12, 2022.

The Events at this Edition of the National Games
Around 7000 athletes from 28 states and eight union territories along with the Services - sports team of the Indian Armed Forces, will participate in the National Games. Overall, there are 36 sporting events.
These are Aquatics, archery, Indian archery, athletics, badminton, basketball, beach sports, boxing, canoeing, cycling, fencing, football, golf, gymnastics, hockey, judo, kabaddi, kho kho, lawn bowls, mallakhambh, netball, roller sports, rowing, rugby 7s, shooting, soft tennis, softball, squash, table tennis, tennis, triathlon, volleyball, weightlifting, wrestling, wushu, and yoga asana.
The Venue and Schedule of National Games
- The 36th National Games 2022 will be held in Gujarat cities, including Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, Surat, Vadodara, Rajkot, and Bhavnagar.
- The track cycling competition, however, will take place in Delhi at the velodrome.
- The largest National Games will occur with about 15,000 athletes, coaches, and officials competing in 36 sports disciplines nationwide.
The Participating Teams at National Games
- National Games 2022: Teams from each of India’s 28 states, eight union territories, and one from the Indian Armed Forces, are prepared.
- Ladakh, Dadra, Nagar Haveli, and Daman and Diu, three recent union territories, are prepared to participate in their first National Games.
- A team representing Bodoland may also compete in these games because the Bodoland Territorial Region was provided with the opportunity to compete in national-level sporting events under the provisions of a contract signed in January 2020.

History of National Games
- The first National Games were held before independence, organized by the All-India Olympic Committee in 1924 at Lahore.
- Then, it was referred to as the “All India Olympic Games.”
- Since 1924, there have been four ingeminate of the Games, with the first three taking place in Lahore and the fourth in Allahabad.
- The tournament was renamed the “National Games” in 1940, and Mumbai served as the host city.
- The inaugural National Games after independence were held in Lucknow in 1948.
- After the Games’ initial surge in popularity, there appeared to be a decline, which prompted IOA’s intervention in 1985.
- To attract more viewers, they chose to restructure the Games along with Olympic principles. More than 5000 athletes have competed in the Games since then.
